Athlone River Festival

Description

The Athlone River Festival is one of the Midlands’ most exciting annual events, bringing together local heritage, culture, entertainment and community spirit on the August Bank Holiday weekend. Set against the stunning backdrop of the River Shannon, the festival celebrates everything that makes Athlone a unique destination while showcasing the very best of its businesses, attractions and people.

Each year, visitors are invited to embark on a journey through Athlone’s rich history with a distinctive Viking theme. The festival combines historical storytelling with modern family entertainment, creating an unforgettable experience for people of all ages. From Viking reenactments and interactive displays to water-based adventures and international food experiences, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

The festival programme features a wide variety of activities, including kayaking, longboat races, fishing competitions and family-friendly entertainment throughout the town. Visitors can explore vibrant market stalls at the Athlone Woollen Mills Market, discover unique crafts and locally produced goods, enjoy delicious food from around the world and experience the lively atmosphere created by carnival attractions and children’s activities.

Beyond the entertainment, the Athlone River Festival plays an important role in supporting and promoting the local economy. The event works closely with local businesses, restaurants, pubs, hotels and tourism attractions, encouraging visitors to explore all that Athlone has to offer while contributing to the town’s continued growth and success.

The festival is planned, organised and delivered entirely by the dedicated volunteers of the Athlone River Festival Committee. Funds raised each year help support the delivery of the festival while also benefiting local causes. Through the generosity of sponsors, businesses and supporters, the festival has donated to community initiatives including Athlone River Safety Awareness and St. Hilda’s Special School.

As the festival continues to grow, its mission remains the same: to celebrate Athlone’s proud heritage, strengthen community connections and create lasting memories for residents and visitors alike.
