Athlone Town FC

Founded in 1887, Athlone Town AFC is proud to be the oldest club in the League of Ireland and one of the most historic football clubs in Ireland. For more than 135 years, the club has been at the heart of football in Athlone and the wider Midlands region, creating unforgettable moments on and off the pitch.

The club originally played at the iconic St. Mel’s Park, located just a short distance from its current home. In 2007, Athlone Town AFC moved to Athlone Town Stadium in Lissywollen, a modern facility that continues to host League of Ireland football, academy development and community events.

Athlone Town AFC enjoyed its most successful period during the 1970s and 1980s. The men’s team secured two League of Ireland titles and earned a place in Irish football history through memorable European campaigns. One of the club’s most famous achievements came in 1975 when Athlone Town held Italian giants AC Milan to a 0-0 draw in European competition, a result that remains one of the greatest nights in the club’s history.

The women’s team, established in 2020, has quickly become one of the most successful sides in Irish football. In just six years, they have captured seven major trophies, including two league titles. Their achievements have also extended to the European stage, with impressive performances in UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifying rounds. The team’s success generated huge support locally, with Athlone Town Stadium selling out on two separate European occasions.

Today, Athlone Town AFC continues to grow through its thriving academy structure, senior teams and community initiatives. The club remains committed to developing local talent, inspiring the next generation of footballers and creating a sustainable future for football in Athlone and across the Midlands.
