Description
Connaught Street & Environs is a volunteer‑led community initiative rooted in Athlone, built from the ground up by residents, traders and collaborators who believe this side of town matters. Over recent years, the group has delivered community markets supporting local enterprise, family‑friendly football tournaments, street theatre and heritage projects including the Connaught Gardens headstones initiative and the Heritage Week programme Echoes of Old Athlone.
In 2025, Connaught Street & Environs was named a National Finalist in the National Heritage Awards under Exploring Our Foundations and recognised as Westmeath Independent Community Group of the Year. These achievements reflect steady grassroots work — activating underused spaces, strengthening neighbour‑to‑neighbour connections and building pride in place. Joining Athlone Chamber strengthens the vital link between community and commerce as Connaught Street continues to evolve.
